About Bifrost        CV           Educational Aims         The staff

BIFROST - FOF's art school for the mentally handicapped.

Bifrost Art School started in 1995 with room for 10 students expanding in November 2000 to accommodate 15 students.
There are 5 teachers on the staff of Bifrost and all have a teacher training and art background.
The teachers' timetable is such that there are always 3 teachers at the school, the remaining 2 having time off to work
on their own art projects.

A placement at Bifrost gives the students the opportunity of being a part of an artistic environment where they can
develop their skills, work in depth and discover new means of expressing themselves.

We work with various mediums and techniques in the areas of drawing, painting, graphics and sculpture. We work with
colour and mediums and the students are also taught some history of art. They work individually but with class teaching
in connection with any visits to museums and galleries. The school year ends with an exhibition of the students' work.
Their work is also regularly exhibited at home and abroad. Students who are considering a year at the art school can
come for a trial period in order to find out whether working with art is of interest to them.

Fifty pupils have passed through Bifrost since the start in 1995. Several of them have made great progress over
the years, planning their own relevant projects which have enabled them to develop artistically. They are incredibly
productive and have exhibited their work regularly.

In addition to exhibitions in Denmark, the Bifrost students have exhibited their work in Japan, Ireland, Germany,
Scotland, Hungary, France, Belgium and Finland - individually or as a member of a group. Some of our students have
given talks on their own work, been the subject of a TV2 programme or taken part in censored exhibitions in France
and Germany. Others have worked on large decorative projects.

A handicap is often synonymous with limitations but when you view the work of the mentally handicapped it is vital to
look at things from many different angles. As teachers, we have often had to admit that we are the ones responsible
for introducing many of the limitations that may have cropped up.

About Bifrost        CV           Educational Aims         The staff         top

Educational Aims

From the beginning, the teachers at Bifrost have developed a method of teaching with emphasis on:

Values:
Respect for the student as a unique and exceptional individual.
To teach in a professional and accountable way.
The work produced is to be seen as an artistic statement.

Aims:
That the student develops his/her own artistic potential.
That the student gains an insight into the history of art depending on interest and needs.
To develop the student's understanding of the connection between theory and practice.
To develop the student's theoretical and practical skills.

Teaching:
Differentiated teaching
We support the individual student in order to encourage the development of independent
artistic expression.
To set targets which are relevant for the student's further development.
In the long term to enable the student to start relevant, self-motivated projects and thereafter
to be able to appraise the results critically and constructively.
To teach these main areas - drawing, painting, sculpture and graphics.

Methodology:
Based on developmental theory. Our starting point is the individual student.
The student's weak and strong points are revealed after an in-depth introduction to the
various mediums.

Using experimental teaching, we work to break down some of the limitations the student feels
in order to introduce new insight to the student.

Working individually and in depth, the student is given support in order to develop and strengthen his/her skills within the area he/she prefers.

In respect for the studen's own way of expressing himself, we do not add anything to the student's work ourselves, nor do we provide any specific suggestions as to how to complete the project. On the contrary, we highlight the problems each student may have from different angles in an all-round way so that the student will be able to decide for himself.

Promotion:
It is important for us that the students have the opportunity to exhibit their work
individually or in small groups. The students are involved as much as possible in selecting
and hanging their work, in the opening of any exhibition and in various kinds of marketing.
In addition, both the students and the teachers work together to find suitable exhibition
venues. The students are present at the exhibitions, ready to talk about their work and to
explain what lies behind their art. Bifrost takes 25% of the result of any sale to cover
the cost of materials.
